A new year, a new decade looking forward to 2020… Progress made by the Restoration and Beautification Committee of Columbiana in 2019 to restore Firestone Park was significant.
Mirror Lake was gloriously restored and dedicated. An informative display at the Street Fair helped local residents learn of the exciting happenings within the park, and many strategy meetings took place among the R & B Trustees & Committee, the Park Board, City Council, various contractors, the committee’s engineering firm and the committee’s landscape specialists.
Filming of a documentary also began to preserve the history of the renovation. Pavilion #3 was made handicapped accessible and a new playground added. Countless hours went into plans for the restoration of the landscaping for the entire park and for a new Dog Park within.
Committee members visited local businesses for donations to restore the sports courts for basketball, tennis and pickle ball, with generous contributions coming forth from Humtown Products, Farmers National Bank, Deluxe Motors, Das Dutch Haus Restaurant, Bakery and Gift Shop, Warrick-Kumer Funeral Home, C. Tucker Cope Company and the Morning Journal News. “Postings from the Park” by Pat Tingle became a popular column in Morning Journal.
Work continues on this exciting three-million dollar capital project to beautify and bring into the 21st century a park which has given so much recreation, enjoyment and happy times to the people of Columbiana for over 8 decades since Harvey S. Firestone donated, in the mid-1930s, the land for the park to his hometown.
